Geotechnical Engineer

My interest in underground construction stems from my long-standing fascination with civil engineering ‘mega projects’ such as Crossrail and the Thames Tideway Tunnel, to take recent examples. I studied Civil Engineering for my undergraduate degree at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG). In 2014 I joined University of Oxford as a postdoctoral researcher in experimental geotechnics focused on industry-funded research projects and was subsequently promoted to departmental lecturer in geotechnical engineering in January 2017. I was recently awarded a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship entitled “intelligent real-time monitoring to inform underground construction processes”. My research aims to develop intelligent, automated methods for instrumenting, measuring and monitoring soil-structure interaction during construction, to provide real-time feedback to site engineers and to develop current design methods.
