Marina Jirotka
Human centred computer scientist
I am Professor of Human Centred Computing in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford. I lead an interdisciplinary research group looking at how to build computing systems responsibly to support human, societal and environmental values. I lead projects investigating bias in algorithms and developing trust in online platforms. I am also co-director of an Observatory for Responsible Research and Innovation in ICT (ORBIT) that will provide RI services to ICT researchers and practitioners. I have recently been awarded an EPSRC Established Career Fellowship – a five-year investigation into Developing Responsible Robots for the Digital Economy. From this work we are part of the Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) Festival showcasing some of our research: https://www.ukras.org/robotics-week/.
From my work on analysing the spread of hate speech and misinformation on social media, I was appointed specialist advisor to the House of Lords Select Committee on Communications for their inquiry into Children and the Internet. During this project we did a lot of work with schools and even produced a video: http://www.digitalwildfire.org.
