Nick Hawes
Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Scientist
I am an Associate Professor of Engineering Science in the Oxford Robotics Institute which is part of the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. I am also a Tutorial Fellow at Pembroke College. I research the development and application of techniques from artificial intelligence (AI) to create autonomous robots that are able to perform useful tasks in all sorts of challenging environments, from fusion reactors and Loch Ness, to care homes and offices. I am particularly interested in algorithms for robot decision-making in the face of uncertainty, the coordination of human-robot teams, and how AI methods can allow robots to operate robustly for long durations in settings that were not designed for them.
